  • Legal and time requirements for RE

It is very important that before you start to plan your RE teaching, you are aware of the legal and time requirements for teaching RE. These are detailed on pages 3 - 5 of Living Difference IV, the RE agreed syllabus for Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton schools.

    Time for RE

It is recommended that the following minimum hours should be devoted to RE and Living Difference IV planning has been designed with these time recommendations in mind:

    • EYFS classes: approximately 36 hours per year
    • Key Stage 1: 36 hours per year
    • Key Stage 2: 45 hours per year

Please note that collective worship is not part of the taught day and cannot be considered as part of the recommended time for teaching RE.

    • Long-term planning for RE

Living Difference IV, the agreed syllabus for RE, contains recommended long-term plans for KS1 and KS2. Please click here and go to pages 46-47 for KS1 and 48-49 for KS2.

    • Staff training on RE

A PowerPoint giving an overview of teaching RE according to Living Difference IV. A useful resource for staff training at a staff meeting.
    • Auditing your school's RE

Useful for a staff meeting: monitoring the RE provision in your school:

      - a useful audit form for all teaching staff, entitled How is my RE?

      - a pupil questionnaire

    • Helping children understand the cycle

These resources are useful for teachers who are new to the agreed syllabus methodology and form a starting point for their teaching.

      • The concept cycle for children (colour) can be enlarged to A3 and displayed in the classroom: draw the children's attention to it at each part of the cycle . It is written simply enough to be used at KS1 and KS2.
      • Two PowerPoint presentations to explain the cycle to KS2 children.
      • What's the Big Idea can be quickly adapted to any concept. Useful to show at the beginning of the unit and at the start of each lesson to help children follow the cycle.
      • The cycle for children explains the cycle generally; change the order of the slides if you are starting at Communicate.
      • Book insert for cycle of enquiry (thanks to Hook Infant School).
