  • Teaching RE at the Foundation Stage with LDIV

It is a legal requirement for schools with EYFS children to follow the requirements of the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage, which can be accessed here:

Early years foundation stage (EYFS) statutory framework - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

The statutory framework has a specific reference to RE in the EYFS goal Understanding the World: People, Culture, and Communities which states that children should:

"know some similarities and differences between different religious and cultural communities in this country, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class"

It is also a legal requirement for children in EYFS (children in year R) in maintained and church controlled schools to access RE as laid down in Living Difference IV, the Agreed Syllabus for RE in Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton schools.

RE curriculum planning for Reception year children in the Foundation Stage should ensure continuity and progression in children's learning towards and throughout KS1. Planning must ensure inclusion of at least two units relating to a Christian context and two units which focus on the religion explored within KS1 at the school. It is recommended that 5 to 6 units of work are taught annually.

For further information, please see Living Difference IV and RE in the Foundation Stage teaching pack, available to purchase from the RE Centre.
